FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK REVIEWED BY ROUGH EDGES!

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK REVIEWED BY ROUGH EDGES!

JAMES REASONER GIVES FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK A GREAT REVIEW OVER AT HIS ROUGH EDGES BLOG . . .

The great Fight Card series goes international with King Of The Outback, which is set in Australia. Another difference is that for the first time the narrator isn't a boxer but rather the trainer for a traveling tent show of fighters. Yack, as he's known, is an American who stayed in Australia after recovering there from wounds he received fighting in the South Pacific during World War II. The star of the traveling troupe is an aborigine named Tommy King, the so-called King of the Ring.

Not surprisingly, there's a dangerous rivalry between the show Yack works for and another troupe of boxers that's backed by the local crime syndicate. That rivalry escalates into open warfare. Throw in a boxing kangaroo, a whole tribe of aborigines, arson, a crooked referee, and it all builds to a very satisfying climax that has a nice epic feel to it.

The author behind the Jack Tunney house-name this time around is David James Foster, and while I'm not familiar with his work, he does a fine job of mixing local color, good characters, humor, and plenty of pugilistic action.  Fight Card is one of the most consistently entertaining e-book series out there, and King Of The Outback is a worthy entry indeed.  Recommended.

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK

Outback Australia 1954

Two rival tent boxing troupes clash over a territorial dispute in the Outback town of Birdsville. In the sweltering heat, tensions simmer, tempers flare, and as things reach boiling point, a boxing tent is burned to the ground.

Fighting men know only one way to solve their disputes, and that’s in the ring. The solution, a show-down, smack-down, winner take all bout between the two rival outfits.

In the blue corner, representing ‘Walter Wheeler’s Boxing Sideshow’ is Tommy King, a young aboriginal boxer with a big heart and iron fists.

In the red corner, representing ‘Arnold Sanderson’s Boxing Show’, is ‘Jumpin’ Jack Douglas, a monstrous wrecking machine from the city – a man who’ll do anything to win.

The fight – brutal. In the world of Tent Boxing, in the harsh Australian Outback, weight divisions and rules don’t count for much. It’s a fight to decide, who is indeed, King of the Outback!

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK PROMO!

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK PROMO!

WHILE RESEARCHING FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK, WE FOUND OUT A LOT ABOUT THE CRUELTY OF USING BOXING KANGAROOS BACK IN THE '50S ... AND, WHILE THERE IS A BOXING KANGAROO IN KING OF THE OUNTBACK, WE THINK YOU'LL FIND IT A SYMPATHETIC AND ULTIMATELY UPLIFTING SUB-PLOT ...

DAVID FOSTER GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON BOXING KANGAROOS ON HIS BLOG, PERMISSION TO KILL, IN PREPARATION FOR THE LAUNCH OF FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK . . .

Obviously fighting a kangaroo is, well in my onion, pretty barbaric really – and certainly not politically correct today. But it was a common practice for Australian carnivals and circuses to have such an attraction in days gone by . . .

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK PROMO!

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK PROMO!

DAVID FOSTER HAS POSTED PART 2 OF THE OUTBACK FIGHT CLUB DOCUMENTARY ON HIS PERMISSION TO KILL BLOG AS PART OF THE PROMO FOR THE UPCOMING FIGHT CARD NOVEL: KING OF THE OUTBACK . . .

. . . Part 2 of the documentary about Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe. As I mentioned yesterday, King of the Outback is set in the world of tent boxing in the 1950s. What this contemporary documentary doesn’t show, is the large amount of aboriginal men who would work the tent boxing circuit as fighters but in the past (probably from the 1920s right through to 1980s) . . .

FIGHT CARD: KING OF THE OUTBACK PROMO!

IN PREPARATION FOR THE MAY FIGHT CARD RELEASE (THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL FIGHT CARD OFFERING) OF, KING OF THE OUTBACK,
DAVID FOSTER OVER AT HIS BLOG, PERMISSION TO KILL, HAS POSTED PART ONE OF A DOCUMENTARY ON THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK FIGHT CLUB, AKA: TENT BOXING . . .

. . . King of the Outback, which is released later this month, is set in the world of outback tent boxing. As tent boxing is pretty much unique to Australia, a brief lesson is probably in order.

[On the bolg] in four snippets, is Part 1 of a documentary about Fred Brophy, who ran the last boxing tent in the world. As you’ll see, tent boxing is very different to traditional ring boxing – and at times, a pretty tough life for the fighters involved . . .
