FIGHT FILMS: KID GALAHAD 1937
RETRO-POP CULTURE BLOGGER EVAN LEWIS REVIEWS THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF FIGHT FILM KID GALAHAD FROM 1937 (STARRING BOGART NOT ELVIS)
... I was always thought Kid Galahad was just an Elvis movie (albeit an above-average Elvis movie, because it had fighting built into the storyline and supporting cast members who could actually act). Boy, was I wrong. The real Kid Galahad is this 1937 classic, while the Elvis vehicle is only a pale imposter. This one has rock-solid performances from Robinson, Davis and Bogart, some fine directing from Michael Curtiz, and a screenplay I can’t kick about ...

NEW PULP PUBLISHERS TEAM UP!
NEW PULP PUBLISHERS TEAM UP!
Terry Quinn was an enforcer for the Irish Mob in New York during the
1930s. One of the toughest and the best. But before he donned a trench-coat and
fedora, before his life took the deadly detour leading him deep into the underworld,
Quinn was an up and coming heavy weight boxer with a good chance at the
title.
Created by author Terrence McCauley, Quinn’s story is about
to unfold from two of today’s most popular pulp publishers, Airship 27
Productions and Fight Card.
Initially McCauley submitted his full length crime novel,
“Prohibition,” to Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “It’s a tough, gritty fast paced gangster
book,” related Fortier, “that reminded me of those classic black and white
Warner Brothers movies of the 30s and 40s.
After reading the first few chapters, it was a done deal that we were
going to publish this.”
“Prohibition,” by Terrence McCauley will be released by
Airship 27 Productions in December. The
book will feature a cover and nine interior illustrations by artist Rob Moran,
a creator noted for his noir inspired art with book design by Art Director Rob
Davis.
But McCauley was far from done with Quinn. As a writer, he was intrigued by Quinn’s
backstory- how he became the man the underworld fears. For this early story, set in Quinn’s days in
the boxing ring, McCauley believed he
knew the perfect target for such a story - the Fight Card series created by
Paul Bishop and Mel Odom. Each month
since January 2012, the Fight Card series has published a new novelette from
some of the finest action scribes in the field of New Pulp - all writing under
shared pseudonym of Jack Tunney. Each
tale in the Fight Card series features a hard hitting melodrama centered in the
world of boxing inspired by the fight pulps of the ‘30s and 40s - such as Fight Stories Magazine and Robert
E.Howard’s two-fisted boxing tales featuring Sailor Steve Costigan.
Upon receiving McCauley’s inquiry, Bishop quickly approved
it. “I have been constantly amazed at the
varied stories the Fight Card series has produced,” Bishop said, “And
Terrence’s story featuring the origins of his Quinn character was another
completely unique take on the mythology of boxing noir.”
McCauley’s tale of Quinn’s boxing days, “Fight Card: Against
The Ropes,” will be published in January or Feburary of 2013.
As for McCauley, he couldn’t be happier. “Even before Airship 27 agreed to publish
Prohibition, I'd always envisioned my Terry Quinn character to be part of a
larger body of work than just one book. That's why I was honored when Fight
Card gave me the opportunity to tell of Quinn's beginnings with Fight
Card:Against The Ropes. I'm honored that Quinn has found homes with both
Airship 27 and Fight Card. He’s also
been featured in earlier short stories that have appeared in a variety
anthologies.”
Airship 27 Productions and Fight Card are set to deliver a
solid one-two punch knock-out that will have New Pulp fans cheering!

THE SCIENCE (FICTION) OF FIGHT FICTION!
ROBERT EVANS ~ AUTHOR OF FIGHT CARD: GOLDEN GATE GLOVES
Science Fiction and Fantasy grabbed hold of me in high school and didn’t let go. I started writing in the genre as soon as I realized I could, but somewhere between then and now, I was introduced to the military as a whole and a specific military form of self-defense called the Army’s Modern Combatives. This is a great program, both challenging and rewarding, and it is where I was first introduced into the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and in a roundabout way, to boxing. However, I didn’t start writing stories in the boxing and MMA genres because of my experiences in the Army or with the Combatives program.
The thrust to write boxing/MMA tales came during a time in my life when I decided to take a trip into history and read the masters of Science Fiction and Fantasy. I searched the Internet and old bookstores (sadly, many of these are disappearing due to the influence of the Internet) for the old pulps. I was looking for and reading the stories that started the sci-fi/fantasy genres by authors who cut their teeth in the pulps – such as Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Fritz Leiber, and many more. I searched for those who wrote enthralling and entertaining tales, who were the cutting edge in fiction.
None stood out more than Robert E. Howard, in particular his tales of the battling boxer Sailor Steve Costigan. My imagination was immediately captured by these “two fisted” boxing yarns – by the character of Costigan himself, a man fighting with honor and a deep set of morals, in far off exotic lands. That is one of the things I miss most about the old stories … the settings were exotic, dark, foreboding and full of adventure.
Today, with the internet and nearly every square inch of the world photographed and recorded, the allure of an exotic local is lost, but it was something I was hoping to revisit with my stories. While I was becoming acquainted with the pulp masters, I was also becoming very interested in MMA and following the sport as a fan. I started looking for new authors who were writing in the MMA/boxing field. However, I failed to find any.
Suddenly what sounded like stories I would be interested in reading, became a great opportunity for me to jump into the genre, and fill a specific void. With that little bit of spark, I created my MMA fighting Army Staff Sergeant Mickey O’Quinn. Mickey O’Quinn’s first two stories, Basement Brawl and Foul Fight With A Pit Viper, caught the attention of Paul Bishop – the co-creator of the Fight Card series – who asked if I would be interested in contributing a Fight Card tale.
I had already read the available Fight Card titles, and was very excited about the storylines and the pulp/noir feel of the writing. As a result, it wasn’t much of a choice for me to say yes and get to work on a story that had been sitting in the back of my brain looking for a way out.
The story, Fight Card: Golden Gate Gloves, takes place around San Francisco and the Gold Country of the California foothills. These are places I know very well, having worked in San Francisco for over five years and currently living and working in the Gold Country. The main character is Conall O’Quinn, the grandfather of my MMA fighting Staff Sergeant, Mickey O’Quinn. I couldn’t help but tie these two storylines together with a bloodline, because like a well executed combination – it just worked.

"Pulp," Tommy Hancock, Pulp Ark Organizer and Partner in Pro Se Productions, the company sponsoring Pulp Ark, "is a marvelous, massively diverse field...a style that has transcended its origins in the early 20th Century in cheaply printed magazines and found its way into every medium available to modern fans. Classic characters and stories are finding new life with readers and enthusiasts today and new tales centered around original characters are exploding onto the scene as well. This year, Pulp Ark 2013 will celebrate the variety that is Pulp in many ways. Our Three Guests of Honor most definitely reflect both the differences and the common denominators in Pulp, both classic and new, both originals of today and inspirations of yesteryear. "These three," Hancock stated, "represent a huge variety within Pulp today, but they all also show the commonalities of what Pulp is. And as far as mediums, everything from books to comics to television to sculpture to painting and more is represented by these fantastic Guests. It's a privilege for Pulp Ark to have them as its centerpiece in 2013."
Pulp Ark is a Writer's Conference/Convention focused on 'Pulp' fiction. Although defined narrowly by many, Pulp Ark promotes Pulp Fiction as multi genre multi medium storytelling that typically involves action, adventure, larger than life heroes and villains, and a strong focus on both plot and characterization. "Pulp," Hancock said, "began as a medium in which many great writers told a lot of wonderful stories and readers could pick 'em up a 100 or more pages at a time for a dime. Although it's no longer that necessarily, the sensibilities of Pulp storytelling, the style, the methodology, all the stuff fans have remembered and enjoyed for over 80 years about those kinds of tales, all of that is still around and available from all sorts of authors, artists, performers and companies. That is what Pulp Ark is all about."
Pulp Ark 2013 will be held in Springdale, Arkansas April 26-28, 2013 at the Holiday Inn Springdale Hotel and Convention Center in Springdale, Arkansas, 1500 South 48th Street, phone number- 1-479-751-8300.

FIGHT FICTION: SECONDS TO GO!
FIGHT FICTION: SECONDS TO GO!
BRIAN BUSBY OF THE DUSTY BOOKCASE BLOG TIPPED ME TO HIS POST ON A FIGHT NOVEL I’VE NEVER COME ACROSS BEFORE – SECONDS TO GO BY PHIL STRONG ...
Is anything to be made of the similarity between the name Danny Cannon, protagonist of Seconds to Go, and that of his creator Danny Halperin?
Hope not.
We first catch sight of Danny Cannon at age eleven as he's being beaten by his father Matt. A bat to the head, a fist in the face, whipping with a belt... and who knows what we've missed. But wait, there's more:
Again and again the belt descended.
At last Danny could bear it no longer. Like a caged beast suddenly freed, he turned on his father and wrestled with him for possession of the belt. Matt roared with rage; his meaty right hand clutched the boy's throat and he shook that twisting young body as if it were a rattling bag of coals.
Exhausted, Danny went limp, Matt let him fall to the floor where he kicked him in the stomach. The boy writhed and screamed as the boot connected.
"Now – now – what's yore answer?" said Matt, breathing heavily, laying down a fine mist of whisky breath close to Danny's face.
"I – I'll go."
Where to?
Halperin maintains the mystery for a several more pages before having Danny walk through New York's East Side to Liffey's Canned Shrimp and Lobster. What follows is a Dickensian scene set in the Depression

FIGHT MEMOIR: MY CALL TO THE RING!
FIGHT MEMOIR: MY CALL TO THE RING
My Call To The Ring: A Memoir Of A Girl Who Yearns To Box is the story of Deirdre Gogarty, an Irish lass whose love for the fight game in the ‘80s sets her on a quest to become a world champion – not exactly an easy task even without the fact Ireland banned women from the sport at the time.
Gogarty’s story (written with Darrelyn Saloom) is well told and inspiring. However, there are two things setting this memoir apart from other similar boxing travails. The first is the atmosphere captured by the prose as it delineates the underbelly seediness of the training conditions faced by all but the highest level of boxers. There is no glamour here, just hard graft – hitting and being hit in tattered rings jerry-rigged in sheds and garages, stifling hot air, and the uncertainty of where the next fight, the next dollar, and sometimes even the next meal are going to come from.
Secondly, and most important to the success of the narrative, is the way Gogarty’s ‘voice’ has been captured. You believe Gogarty is sitting next to you, sharing her fears, shortcomings, uncertainties, defeats and triumphs.
As with her opponents in the ring, it is ultimately Gogarty’s relentless courage and determination that leaves its mark on her readers. My Call To The Ring is a standout addition to the shelves of boxing literature.

ALL PULP FEATURES FIGHT CARD!
PULPMEISTER BOBBY NASH INTERVIEWS FIGHT CARD AUTHOR PAUL BISHOP (FIGHT CARD: FELONY FISTS) OVER AT THE ALL PULP BLOG ...
Pulp novels covered a wide range of genres. New Pulp Author Paul Bishop is working with a talented crop of writers to bring back the sweet science to pulp. Welcome to Fight Card.
All Pulp recently sat down with Bish to discuss his writing, the Fight Card Series, and all things pulp. Pulpsters, meet Paul Bishop.
AP: Tell us a little about yourself and your pulp interests.
PB: I’ve been voraciously reading pulp stories since my early twenties starting with reprints from the detective story magazines (such as Black Mask), and eventually moving on to the standard hero tales like the Shadow and Doc Savage. When I started collecting pulps, I found myself drawn to the adventure, sports, and western pulps as they were more affordable and plentiful.
I first got hooked on collecting copies of Argosy and Adventure – magazines containing stories from the likes of H. Beresford Jones, Talbot Mundy, and the swashbuckling tales of George Challis (Max Brand). A long run of Street and Smith’s Sport Story was next as I collected tales by Jackson Scholz under his many pseudonyms. All of this led to Fight Stories Magazine and my fixation and enjoyment of fight fiction, which would eventually inspire the Fight Card series of novelettes I currently write and edit.
